PC users, is this a good deal?

My boss needs a new machine, and the best deal I have been able to negotiate is this...

2.8 Ghz P4
512 RAM
160 GB HD
17" Flat Panel

$700

Is this a good deal?

Very good, indeed. The only issue of concern would be the reliability of the hardware. For example, Western Digital is a leading hard drive manufacturer, but their HDs are more likely to to cripple and die than, say, Maxtor's. So if it's a bunch of state of the art crap, it's still probably a good deal, but the chances of it living a long life are reduced (though not entirely guaranteed to fail).

Still sounds good to me. Do you know the different manufacturers of the hardware?

That's a pretty good deal...but like Kenny said, reliability of the hardware does greatly depend on the manufacturer...tell your boss to make sure to read some hardware reviews and research brands before committing to any purchases...it will definitely save on the headaches in the long run...

...all pretty good review sites...NewEGG has mostly customer reviews, but those can still be really helpful once you weed out the crap ones.

Thanks guys. I am a bit clueless about PC manufacturers. Mac shit, I know. Windows and what not is a bit out of my league. I think, regardless of durability/reliability issues, I am going to pull the trigger. He needs a new machine bad, and I am sick of dealing with the questions. I have him backing up everything he does already, and so, even with a catastrophic HD failure, all he will lose is the system. Besides, hard-drives are cheap, and he really only needs about 10 gigs of storage.

Thanks though...

You have to know that the technologies implied are important. For instance, 512 Mb Ram is nice but the frequency of the RAM (and its latency) may vary. There's a big difference between PC2100 and PC3200 RAM, but the retailers might only sell you "512 Mb of RAM". Same for the Motherboard.

Still, even in the case of poor quality hardware, it's a bargain !

I bought my medium config (2.4GHz P4/80 Gb HD/256 Mb PC3200 RAM/17"CRT screen/800 MHz FSB-Hyperthreaded MB) 5 months ago 900 euros ($1100) and it was a bargain ! SO yeah, it's a good deal.
