i was at a party this weekend above this venue here that sometimes has them. it's not like some little house party. it's in this large space and there are always TONS of people there. i guess somehow sometime my keys slipped out of my pocket. i didn't notice until anyone was gone (not that it would've made a difference, it was better that i found out when i was about to leave). so some people tried to help me find them but we couldn't find them. and the guy sweeping up all the beer cans/bottles said he had been looking but didn't see them.

my friend wanted to go (even though this guy i sort of knew that lives there offered for me to sleep on the couch), so he left his number and they said they would call if they found them. my friend went to sleep in his car and i waited out infront of the building (this was at about 6:30am). finally someone came out so i got in and left the back door opened and got my friend inside cause there's a couch in the lobby. i guess i fell asleep eventually and the manager showed up and i told her...

how i lost my keys (but i said i left them in my friends car) and she said she couldn't give me an extra set. is that illigal? my dad said to ask her again tomorrow because if she doesn't give them to me she is violating the lease. she let me into my apartment and all ...but now i have to leave my apartment unlocked when i leave and i have to wait outside for someone to open the door to get inside the building. i also cant' get in the laundry room and i can't check my mail.

i'm afraid to ask her about keys tomorrow though because i'm going to feel like a total jack ass for asking again.

I think the lying about leaving them somewhere is the part where you fucked up. you would've been better off explaining that you lost them in the first place, and that they are nowhere to be found.

although I don't think the apartment can just give you new keys when you've lost your set. it seems like they could do it for a day or so, but most likely they will insist on changing the locks (to at least your apartment, and possibly to the building), and you will most likely have to foot the bill.

well there was a chance they could've been found so that's why i said i left them in a car. and my dad (and pretty much everyone i've talked to agrees) says that if she doesn't give me an extra set we can end my lease and get the deposit back. also i don't think they would change the locks. my building is huge and everyone would get pissed about the front/back/laundry room door locks being changed and the building is like 80 years old... they probably couldn't just change the locks on the mail boxes.

it's not that hard for them to make a copy of the keys.

it's not a question of it being difficult to make a set of keys, it's a question of a "security risk" to have keys to the building floating around god knows where. you may want to read the fine print of your lease, it may even have some stuff about this sort of thing included (as leases pretty much include everything from rules about pets to what to do if your grandmother wants to move in and live in your closet).

well it's kind of hard for the keys to end up back here because they're probably in the garbage plus no one would know what building they belong to. there are thousands of apartment buildings around just this area and there is no way someone is going to realize that they are to my building.

It's standard procedure for landlords to change the locks when keys are missing. It's just a safety precaution. They do it here at school too. They charge you up the wazoo for missing keys and then make you pay for the lock change.

The story here is DON'T LOSE YOUR KEYS.

well that's just too crazy.

the lady copied my keys and didn't even charge me, OH YEAH!

but then she started rambling to me about if i wanted a roommate... which made no sense. she must assume that me having people stay over or leaving the tv on means i have a roommate. but i live in a studio and wouldn't be able to handle a roommate.
