DON'T READ THIS IF YOU DON'T WANT THE ANSWER
The answer is always a multiple of 9, and all multiples of 9 are the same symbol. I didn't figure it out myself, I read it somewhere.

indeed, it's very easy to figure out. A two digit number is 10x+y if x and y are the 2 digits. The sum of the two digits is x+y so the difference between the original number and the resulting sum is D=10*x+y -(x+y)=9*x so it's a multiple of 9...
There are dozens of mathematically "magic" things like this.
