all right...so my scanner hasn't been working for a while...and I e-mailed HP to ask how to fix it...

this is what they said...

"..."From the device list, select Computer. Click Properties. A list of IRQs will appear. Universal Host Controller will appear on one of
these numbers. If Universal Host Controller is sharing a number with another device, contact the PC manufacturer for assistance in assigning the USB an exclusive IRQ..."

I'm lazy and don't really want to call the PC manufacturer...so does anyone here know how to do it? IT's a compaq presario 5000 with Windows ME.

help would be VERY greatly appreciated.

thank you!

Is the IRQ share in conflict or not ?

DO what they say (control panel ->system -> device ->USB controller (develop) -> double click on USB Universal Host controller (both of them if you have two), then click on "ressource".

It will display on the left : "Interruption Request" and on the right a number.

If there's a conflict, it will also tell you what is the device it's conflicting with.

Then tell us if there's a conflict or not.

In the "driver" thumbnail, look if your driver's been correctly set too.

(First, I suppose you've checked the wires (if it's a mere USB wire maybe you've got another, try to exchange them to see if it's better), checked the power, and checked that the hamster you smooshed in it to scan it hasn't rooten and poured streams of blood/spurt mix within the scanner )

it says there is no conflict.

my scanner used to work, and it doesnt anymore...and I've tried it on 2 different computers. I've also tried uninstalling many different programs to see if it was conflisting...along with trying to use a USB connector and a parallel port.

and I cleaned the hamster goop up last week.

now what?

are you sure of the program you're using ?
CUz, if it doesn't work on two different computers then, it might be a hardware issue. Is it still under guarantee ?

Try to use your usb ports with something else too (mouse, webcam, digital cam or anything) to check the usb is correct.

Is your usb cable shorter than 6 feet ?

the program I had been using worked fine for about 6 months...and one day, it just stopped. I don't recall making any big changes to my computer that day..it's like it happened out of nowhere.

and yes, its under 6 feet long.

and everything i plugged into that USB port works fine.
